Decorative archways are a fantastic way to welcome members of the public into a park or open space and can be made to reflect the characteristics of the park and facilities within using matching colours and themes.
However, alongside its decorative purposes, metal archways can be just as functional as they are good looking!
Alpha Rail was contacted by Ealing Council to design and manufacture an ornamental archway for Mill Hill Gardens, a quiet little park located in Acton, within the London Borough of Ealing. The purpose of this metal archway was not only to serve as an attractive feature at the entrance of the park, but to also work as a height barrier that could swing open when needed for things such as vehicular access for maintenance.
Alpha Rail supplied and delivered the metal archway which was 3.5 metres wide and 2 metres high. The top of the archway was designed to fit into the cage posts in a way that it could pivot open to allow access of high vehicles when needed. Secured by a vertical drop bolt at the top, the archway can be locked into place when not in use to ensure rigidity.
The decorative cage posts featured the words ‘Mill Hill Gardens’, complemented by leaves and a radiused round bar. The arch was galvanised as standard followed by a polyester powder coated finish in RAL 9005 jet black, with the motifs and text subsequently being highlighted with silver paint to add contrast to the metalwork.
Commenting on the project, Robert Draper of Ealing Council said: “The decorative archway manufactured by Alpha Rail has improved the appearance of the entrance to Mill Hill Gardens whilst also being a useful height barrier for vehicular access.”
