You must have noticed pedestrian guardrails along urban footways and pavements. But do you know what is its purpose and what are the pedestrian guardrail types? If not, don’t worry. In this blog post, we will explain the meaning of guardrail and discuss its types.
What is the pedestrian guardrail?
Pedestrian guardrails are situated on public streets, pavements, urban roads, footbridges and similar in order to prevent pedestrians from various accidents. Guardrails are meant to prevent people from falling as well as from car traffic. They provide a clear barrier between the pedestrian zone and the vehicular traffic zone, car park zone or playing areas.
What are the pedestrian guardrail types?
There are many different types of pedestrian guardrails. Today we will discuss types such as:
- standard pedestrian guardrail
- high visibility pedestrian guardrail
- decorative pedestrian guardrail
- pedestrian parapet guardrail
Standard Pedestrian Guardrail
A standard pedestrian guardrail is a full-height guardrail that has a rectangular section frame of the size of 2m by 1m. It stands above the ground proving an upstand of around 1050mm to 1100mm. Footings of the standard pedestrian guardrail are placed in concrete foundation blocks.
High Visibility Pedestrian Guardrail
High visibility pedestrian guardrail is a type of guardrail that is used to enhance the visibility of pedestrians. Its top section is specifically designed so the drivers can see children and pushchairs better.
Decorative Pedestrian Guardrail
Decorative pedestrian guardrails not only provide a safety layer to the public but also complement the surrounding environment. They are aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Usually, they are placed in more unique locations, where standard guardrails would not suit.
Pedestrian Parapet Guardrail
Pedestrian parapet guardrail is used in places that pose a risk of falling. Usually, they are installed along the pavements of bridges, or in other places where a significant difference in height between levels appears.
