After an eventful 11-month project, the restoration of the £4.8m Highfields Park has finally been completed with metal railings and gates manufacturing specialists, Alpha Rail being one of the main sub-contractors involved.
The much-loved Grade II* listed park is located alongside University Boulevard, adjacent to the prestigious University of Nottingham. The park has undergone major redevelopment work to remove silt from the western boating lake, restore and improve many of the onsite historic buildings, as well as upgrade the parks infrastructure, which is now to home to an adventure golf course and other children’s play activities.
The park restoration project was made possible thanks to £4.8m of funding which was contributed by Heritage Lottery Fund, the Big Lottery Fund’s Parks for People programme and Nottingham City Council.
By project completion, Alpha Rail had removed over 250 linear metres of existing metal railings and gates for refurbishment. To carry out the much-needed restoration, the metalwork was transported back to the Alpha Rail stock yard where it was tagged and processed. Tagging the metalwork enabled Alpha Rail to precisely re-install the metal railings in their original location which prevented any re-install problems further down the line.
The restoration of the metal railings involved stripping off all the original paint, dirt and rust by arranging to have the metalwork shot blasted. Where required, damaged sections of horizontal rails or vertical infills were replaced. The railings were then galvanised to protect from corrosion and to ensure low maintenance and longevity in the future.
As well as repairing existing metal railings, it was agreed that Alpha Rail would manufacture and install over 300 linear metres of new metal railings, including vertical bar, interlaced bow top and gates, which were also galvanised. All new and refurbished metalwork installed on site was factory spray painted in Brunswick Green (NCS Ref: 6030-G30Y) in order to reflect the colours of the County brand identity.
