Culverts allow water to flow underneath obstructions such as roads, paths, and train tracks. Usually surrounded by soil, culverts are typically made of pipes or concrete.
They can be used as a way to provide drainage for ditches on the other side, or to allow water from streams to pass under roads. Culverts may also be used as a bridge to allow vehicles or pedestrians to pass over a waterway while still allowing water to pass.
In order to keep people safe, consideration must be given on how to prevent the risk of fall from height into voids containing water below. Alpha Rail pedestrian parapet is a perfect solution for this, is it is a more heavy-duty specification pedestrian guardrail that meets the loading requirements of BS7818 class 3C.
Compared to the standard pedestrian guardrail, where its main function would be to guide pedestrians to safer crossing points on highways, pedestrian parapet guardrail is a restraint system used where there may be a risk of fall from height on the other side.
Alpha Rail has recently supplied and installed pedestrian parapet on a culvert to the River Wantsum, located in Kent. A full site survey enabled us to manufacture railings for the headwall and special raked panels to follow the wing walls of the structure.
In this instance, a vertical infill bar solution was selected. However, a common choice for headwall railings and wing wall railings is a simple post and 2 rail system, which can also be supplied by Alpha Rail.
As with all Alpha Rail products, the parapet was galvanised as standard to BS EN ISO 1461. If required, materials can also be polyester powder coated in a RAL colour of your choice.
