The basic function of any class 2 pedestrian guardrail is to guide pedestrians to safe crossing points, which all Alpha Rail pedestrian guardrails achieve as a standard.
But in some locations where there’s a higher level of risk, there will be a need for guardrail that provides even better visibility for pedestrians and drivers. This requires a different model to our standard pedestrian guardrail: In these cases, we recommend you opt for our Optirail™ pedestrian guardrail system.
Since launching Optirail in the 1980s (originally known as Visirail pedestrian guardrail), this high visibility pedestrian guardrail has earned a reputation as the best in the UK. Thanks to a robust research and development process, Optirail has proved to significantly reduce the number of road traffic accidents at locations where it’s used.
Optirail is a panel and post system that has three different panel types: V2, V4 and V8. Each panel has staggered infill bars set to its own unique arrangement and is designed to suit differing road speeds. When planning your pedestrian guardrail installation, it’s important to choose the correct Optirail panel type as well as deciding your ideal finish and colour options.
Optirail™ improves visibility by a factor of 3; that’s three times the time to see, be seen and take action.

The current British Standard for pedestrian guardrails in the UK is BS 7818:1995. There are a number of specifications necessary to meet the requirements depending on the circumstances of your project. You can find more details on the BS 7818:1995 requirementson this page.
