Located just one mile away from Northampton Town Centre, Grade II listed building Delapre Abbey was originally established as a Cluniac Nunnery of St Mary De la Pre.
Built in 1145, by founder Simon de St Liz, the Earl of Northampton at the time, Delapre Abbey is renowned for its rich history perhaps most famously known as the prison where King Henry VI was taken captive during the Battle of Northampton.
In recent years, the Abbey had fallen into a sorry state of repair, but thanks to £3.5m from The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), and a top up from Northampton Borough Council, a £6.3m programme of major repairs and restoration works can now take place.
The aim was to restore the Abbey to a point where it will be able to open its doors to the public for the first time in its long history, and make it a venue capable of hosting both national and international visitor events.
In order to retain the aesthetics of the beautiful Delapre Abbey, Alpha Rail was asked to manufacture and install 9 metres of 1100 high balustrade to various stairwells within the famous grounds.
The metalwork was supplied galvanised and powder coated RAL 7016 Anthracite Grey to ensure it matched in with the surroundings.
