When Caldecott Park was being considered for refurbishment, the gates and railings were an important aspect of this regeneration project.
The majority of its original perimeter metal railings were removed for use during the war in the 1940s, so the park was badly in need of new railings to mark out boundaries and provide long term security and protection for the park.
Landscape architects and project management company Scott Wilson were appointed by Rugby Borough Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund. Having impressed Scott Wilson with our bespoke metalwork skills on a previous project at Battersea Park, they had no hesitation in commissioning us to provide railings and gates for this project.
Taking inspiration from the design used on existing lamp stands around the park featuring a pineapple motif, Scott Wilson utilised our design-assist experience in order to incorporate this into the design of the perimeter fence.
In total Alpha Rail supplied 770m of 1.5m high railings in a vertical bar style which was installed and painted on site by Fitzgerald Contractors. The railing was manufactured in galvanised steel and finished off with spiked head finials in order to provide enhanced security benefits. The finished look was then complemented with a pineapple design finial which was integrated at regular intervals.
Alpha Rail also supplied eight gates in the same complementary style of vertical bar which also incorporated the decorative pineapple finial.
For the play area, Alpha Rail supplied 40m of 1m high interlaced bow top railings to provide a secluded and protected area for young families. Like the perimeter railings, these were site painted, but in yellow, green and blue to complement the bright colours of the playground facilities.
The refurbishment of the park also included new footpaths, a new café, creation of a warden’s office, replacement of a shed, production of a replica fountain, the refurbishment of a band stand, the introduction of a number of sculptures and the creation of a new children’s play area, as well as the planting of new shrubs and flowers.
