Alpha Rail was approached by Tom Brown, the Regeneration and Development Project Manager at Lancaster City Council, to restore the railings at the Lancaster Roman Bath House.
Discovered in 1973-74, the Lancaster Roman Bath House was part of a Roman official’s residence and featured a hypocaust heating system. While most of the structure now lies beneath a car park, some remains are still visible. The bath house was demolished around 340 AD to make way for a new stone fort, part of which, the Wery Wall, still stands nearby.
Lancaster City Council aimed to renovate the area surrounding the Roman Bath House without disturbing the archaeological grounds. This renovation included the installation of new railings around the site.
Alpha Rail was commissioned to replace the old railings at the Lancaster Roman Bath House. Our task was to design and install bespoke railings that matched the style of the original ones but slightly higher, ensuring the historical integrity of the site was maintained. The new railings were made to blend seamlessly with the existing structure, preserving the site’s historical ambiance and aesthetics.
At Alpha Rail, our team of bespoke metalwork specialists is dedicated to helping clients make the best choices for their projects. We provide expert advice on design, dimensions, and other technical specifications. For this project, Vertical Bar Railings were the ideal choice.
We conducted a comprehensive survey, which included ensuring an accurate replication of the existing railings and maintaining the original post positions to avoid disturbing the archaeologically significant ground. Additionally, we assessed the structural integrity of the installation sites and identified any potential challenges. Our team was diligent in installing the new railings precisely in the same locations as the old ones, thereby preserving the historical and visual continuity of the site.
This project, although a very complex one, has gone so well, and our client Tom, was very pleased with the results.
Tom said “Although it was a relatively small project the site constraints made it very complex. Alpha Rail worked with the council to overcome the site constraints to realise the successful completion of the project. I’d highly recommend Alpha Rail to colleagues and any one else.”
