Following a competition to submit designs to improve the environment around the Thessaly Road railway bridge in Nine Elms, the winning proposal by London based artist Yinka Ilori has been brought to life.
Located in Wandsworth, the tired underpass was unwelcoming and in need of some attention. Work began earlier in the year to completely transform the bridge and turn it into a fantastic asset to the local community as well as a transport gateway. Yinka’s design is called Happy Street and features an array of bright colours and patterns to bring a friendlier, more uplifting atmosphere to the underpass.
The new space is already a huge success with the community, especially the local schoolchildren who were previously uncomfortable to walk under the bridge.
Alpha Rail was appointed by Wandsworth Council to supply 153 linear metres of DG1104 decorative pedestrian guardrail, which was hot dip galvanised as standard followed by a polyester powder coated finish in some unique colours as part of Yinka’s design. This included RAL3018 Strawberry Red, RAL2008 Light Red Orange and RAL4005 Blue Lilac.
The metalwork was the finishing touch for the new underpass design, complementing the colours and style of the Happy Street artwork.
"Alpha Rail is proud to have been involved in this community driven project which will be enjoyed by the local community for many years to come."- Phil Ball, Sales Director at Alpha Rail Ltd
