Alpha Rail explains the significance of wrought iron railings used in Victorian times and the projects it has completed to replace them.
Traditional wrought iron railings were once an important and distinctive feature of the Victorian garden suburb. Although many of the original wrought iron railings were removed during the war, some have survived, but many are now in need of repair or replacement.
There is a growing demand to reinstate boundary metal railings because they improve the appearance and add value to area and properties. Alpha Rail regularly receives enquiries from building owners, developers and contractors who wish to reinstate these boundary railings.
Nowadays, most replacement railings are made of steel because iron is no longer commercially available. In addition, our survey team often find that parts of the railing have become rusty and beyond retrieval, making it very difficult to preserve original historic fabric. Consequently it becomes more cost effective to replace with new steel railings.
When designing, manufacturing and installing replacement metal railings we always seek to provide options which will complement the original heritage and reinforce the special character of the historic suburb and add interest to its historic significance.
Our ability to provide the complete bespoke architectural metalwork solution means we can replicate and follow historic precedents such as pattern, material, construction and finish. Through careful inspection of surviving evidence e.g. sockets in plinths, piers and walls we are able to gain a good idea as to the proportions and design of the original railing pattern and using our computer aided design software can provided 3D images of what the old railing might have looked like.
Alpha Rail is proud to manufacture a wide range of metal railings and gates in a variety of designs and finishes colour. We can also offer a choice of decorative finial to complete the perfect look and feel. For further details please browse the website, complete the enquiry form for call us on 01623 750214.
